South Carolina History

People arrived in South Carolina 50,000 years ago! The Native American tribes that arrived here were Cherokee, Creek and Santee. In 1670 the English established a big settlement in this region. Ten in 1710, they divided the territory into two colonies: South Carolina and North Carolina. Slaves were brought from Africa to work on the plantations here. South Carolina wanted its independence from England. This lead to the American Revolution which began in 1775. South Carolina became a state on March 26, 1776. It changed the US constitution on May 23, 1778 and officially became the 13th state. Later, during the Civil War, South Carolina was the first state to leave the union. It rejoined in 1668.
